Trejbal: Shuler’s retirement

On Thursday, Del. Jim Shuler announced his retirement from the General Assembly at the end of the year. The New River Valley will lose a smart, compassionate and effective representative.
Many people know Shuler more for his long career as a Blacksburg veterinarian. Over the years, he probably won as many votes taking care of cats and dogs as he did with any particular policy position.
He served nine terms as a Democrat in the House of Delegates. That easily made him the senior statesman in the valley’s House delegation.
