Editorial: Gay marriage

Repeal the Defense of Marriage Act

Supporters of marriage equality for same-sex couples should let their congressmen know.

Last week, New York became the sixth state — plus the District of Columbia — to allow same-sex marriage. The slow march toward equality continues.

We won’t again make the case today for why same-sex couples deserve equal treatment under the law. If you are among the declining number of people who believe otherwise, a couple of paragraphs will not convince you.

No, this editorial is for the increasing number of people who think gay Americans should not be treated as second-class citizens.

Gay Americans should not be treated as second class citizens. Neither should non-gay Americans be treated as second class citizens. However, non-gay Virginians are treated as second class citizens as evidenced by a Botetourt County jury’s disposition, Case No. CR97000192-00, 12/18/1997, that concluded that the adult, male, heterosexual that engaged in consensual carnal knowledge with an adult, female, heterosexual, in the privacy of his own home, was guilty and sentenced the male to no jail time, a fine of $25.00 and costs of $1,271.50, all of which was paid. However, the male has been a convicted Class 6 felon for the past 14 years which carries all of the negative social and economic stigmas as a Class 1 murderer. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Same sex marriage will put the seal of approval on carnal knowledge in Virginia but no one seems to want to talk about that. Go figure.

I completely agree with marriage equality. What could possibly make a person think that simply because they are heterosexual that they have the right to determine who can and cannot marry? It’s the equivalent of “the perfect race” or be as I am or you are inferior and have no rights. It has been proven that genetics plays a role in sexual preference, so it’s not a matter of choice. It’s inherent to those born homosexual. Instead of making such a huge deal over gay marriage, start concentrating on worthwhile causes such as trying to preserve the earth for future generations, feeding, clothing and sheltering those in need, ending global warming, etc.

@2 out of curiosity, got any links for the Koran or Tanach?

For the record I am for gay marriage and was happy to see my home state pass the law.

A bit of ancient wisdom: “The leading cause of divorce is….marriage.”

How many times have we heard divorced individuals say they shouldn’t have married in the first place?

Every state that has had a public referendum on marriage between a man and a women has supported it.

But the voters are stupid, right?

    7. John R – We have a Republic to protect the rights of minorities from the abuses placed on them by the majority. Had it not been that way, public opinion would easily be manipulated to mob rule. Our forefathers knew this and specifically established the Republic so that our elected officials as leaders would make decisions that protect all citizens and not just the majority. Republicans seem to have forgotten that part of the Constitution.
