Schlesser: The facts on hunting

To better manage deer, allow Sunday hunting

By Scott Schlesser

Schlesser lives in Roanoke, is the general manager and property manager at a marina on Smith Mountain Lake and is an avid outdoorsman.

In response to Marlene A. Condon’s essay that appeared in the Jan. 21 issue of The Roanoke Times, I would like to offer the following rebuttal and points of clarification. I will focus primarily on deer hunting, as that is primarily the subject of Condon’s letter.

In an attempt to support her opinion that “The DGIF is basically run by people who are hunters themselves or whose family members hunt” (the implication being that the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries favors hunting over wildlife management), Condon references a fact sheet published by DGIF entitled, “The Buck Stops Here: History, Biology, and Management of White-tailed Deer in Virginia” (http://www.dgif.state.va.us/wildlife/deer/factsheet.pdf).
