Editorial: Roanoke city council nominations

Coasting to re-election

 Roanoke Democrats expect loyalty. An oath might turn off would-be voters.

Roanoke Mayor David Bowers probably will pick up city Democrats’ nomination tomorrow. So will unopposed incumbent council members Anita Price, Sherman Lea and Court Rosen. We can think of but two ways Bowers could lose.

One would be if challenger Sam Rasoul, a young businessman who only recently moved into Roanoke, has somehow managed quickly to make busloads of voting friends eager to head to William Fleming High School between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Though Rasoul did gather support from city voters during his unsuccessful 2008 campaign to unseat Rep.Bob Goodlatte, that was four years ago. Given half a candidate, city Democrats will pull the anyone-but-Goodlatte lever every time.
