Weighing costs in Botetourt
State mandates have forced talk of tax increases into the county’s budget discussions. Like other localities, it has to face community needs squarely.
Botetourt County officials are agonizing over budget numbers for the next fiscal year that stubbornly refuse to move into the public’s comfort zone. Thanks largely to state mandates, the county’s proposed expenses exceed anticipated revenue by millions of dollars.
The board of supervisors will have to cut spending, raise revenue, raid reserves or do a bit of all of the above. What it will not do, despite the political rhetoric of the day, is pass unfunded mandates.
