Sinners, get a good night’s sleep
By Christian Trejbal
Christopher Barnes could be described as a high priest of Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep. A management professor in Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business, Barnes has been studying what happens when workers do not get enough sleep. Short version: Things go badly.
Barnes’ interest in sleep stems from his time before becoming an academic. He served in the U.S. Air Force, where he researched sleep deprivation. How the body and mind perform without sleep are crucial questions when pilots fly long missions.
Trejbal is a Roanoke Times editorial writer. He is based in the New River Valley.
