A familiar warning
Adequate housing is crucial in transitioning individuals from mental institutions to community care.
Virginia has long measured its progress toward a more humane behavioral health care system by the dwindling number of beds available in its mental health hospitals. The reduction has been substantial. The average daily census in the state’s eight adult institutions has declined from 5,967 in 1976 to 1,252 at the end of 2011.



One may comment all they wish regarding this problem, but the question remains: “Who pays for this?”
