As important as the flush toilet
Remote control inventor allowed us to remain seated.
Eugene Polley died on Sunday at the age of 96. Polley is not a household name. But his invention, the TV remote control, is ubiquitous.
What home doesn’t have a couple of these, not one of which can be found without lifting seat cushions? Ah, but the pleasure to gain control of the remote, settle into the easy chair and zip through hundreds of channels in search of something worth an evening’s passing.

Thanks Eugene Polley and the thousands of other people I never knew, who make things easier, quicker, simpler, more widely accessible and better!
I am always marveling at things that make my life easier or better and it is the small things I notice as I cannot afford the big ones. My stock phrase is, “I don’t know who invented the ___________ but I hope they made a mint!” My other stock phrase, “I hope there is a special place in hell for whomever invented the _________!”
