Egos first, children second
Those must have been some heavy-duty ear plugs council members wore during the recent election campaign.
Last week in this space, we wrote about the Roanoke school board chairman’s desire to seek a small tax increase, a year from now, to better compensate teachers so the best ones aren’t lured away for more pay elsewhere. Roanoke City Council members complained it was the first they had heard of Dave Carson’s plan.
That’s hard to believe unless they were sequestered in a sound-proof booth during the just-concluded municipal campaign.

I doubt you realize it, but this is very heavy handed and seems a lot like “sour grapes”. Did EVERY council member say it was the first they heard of it? Had Carson come to the council and presented his bold vision for the schools? Were ALL council members at the meetings where he voiced it to the crowd? And finally, does it REALLY matter, if this is their first notice of it? Snide and unnecessary IMO.
I applaud City Council for holding their word. Time to go line by line in the budget and start cutting. Look within first and then again, and then again. Taxing for raises is not the answer.
