Zoo’s animals are doing well
By Ray-Eric Correia
In response to a recent letter to the editor (“Even the zoo’s animals look depressed,” May 4), officials of Mill Mountain Zoo (Blue Ridge Zoological Society of Virginia) respectfully accept the opportunity to address the criticism.
The zoo’s regional contribution is noteworthy, not only as a beloved attraction but as a center commended by authorities for excellent animal care, particularly of endangered species. The health and well-being of our collection is veterinarian-monitored.

You should not have a “collection”. Zoos are cruel.
Yes, Zoos can be cruel. However, well run zoos where the animals are well cared for can be a valuable educational asset. I’ve been to Mill Mountain Zoo several times and the animals seem to be well cared for. I’ve also been to other zoos with horrendous conditions that deserve to be shut down. Mill Mountains Zoo is not in this category based on what I’ve seen.
