A public process on uranium
Public notice of some meetings on a proposed mining operation has been less than optimal.
During this year’s General Assembly session, Virginia Uranium employed 19 lobbyists to help win support for a proposed mining operation in Pittsylvania County and to keep up with the clutter of government meetings related to that issue.
Farmers, business owners and residents of Southside who worry about environmental and health implications can’t afford an army of lobbyists to maintain vigilance on their behalf. But state officials should make sure the public has the information necessary to participate in discussions on the risks and regulatory demands related to mining the radioactive ore.
