Penn State didn’t happen in a vacuum

As the NCAA seeks to change the football culture at Penn State, it should look inward, too.

The NCAA this week announced sanctions against Penn State University in response to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. It will make an example of the school, as it should, but if it truly seeks to ensure football, indeed any athletics, never again becomes the raison d’ĂȘtre of an academic institution, it must reform itself, not just one university.

    I doubt there are similar cover-ups at other colleges involving felonies, but college football coaches who win have a lot of power. At Virginia Tech, Coach Beamer is paid $2,243,000 million while President Steger is paid $457,000. To me this shows where the focus of big schools are, but this has become the norm at big football schools.
