Putting the squeeze on Virginia’s localities

State cuts drained $1 billion out of budgets for cities, counties and towns.

Cities, counties and towns across the commonwealth have felt more than a little put upon in recent years by state budget cuts that have slashed support for public schools, law enforcement and other local services.

It turns out they have reason to be annoyed.

    Many state lawmakers have abdicated their authority to raise the necessary taxes to Grover Norquist. While no one likes paying more in taxes, who is Norquist to dictate and bully our representatives into signing a pledge that ultimately hurts our commonwealth? I salute Scott Rigell for having the courage to call others out for relinquishing their ability to consider all that is required. By continuing to sign the pledge against taxes they are saying we allow Norquist to control our decisions.
