Managing the rise of black bears, “the monarch of Virginia’s wild kingdom.”

Today, an estimated 16,000 to 17,000 black bears roam Virginia — roam being the key word. That’s quite a comeback for a species that barely topped 1,100 some 55 years ago. Virginia’s forests and mountains probably could support even more bears, but what the environment will tolerate is not necessarily what society will bear.
