Parents must captain autistic child’s course
By Roxana Hartmann
In response to your article “Parents sue Roanoke County school system,” July 7, and the letter, “Atypical students need special programs,” July 11, I offer the following commentary.
The Education for All Handicapped Children Act was enacted into law on Nov. 19, 1975, and was reauthorized in 1990 and renamed IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). In 1998, IDEA was again reviewed and reauthorized. The shame is that, in general, the states have not implemented IDEA as it was intended.
Hartmann, of Blacksburg, is an autism consultant and author.
