Virginia is being over-run with buses hauling political candidates looking for votes and interest group advocates staging publicity stunts. One of the more unusual tours of the commonwealth is being organized by the Republican Cigar Smokers.
Here’s how the Portsmouth-based group describes itself in a press release:
Our events bring like-minded people together for a good time and a good smoke while espousing Republican principles. We celebrate freedom, the American Dream, and provide a good time for our event attendees on the road to victory in November 2012 and beyond.
The closest event scheduled so far is at the home of state Sen. Bill Stanley in Glade Hill on Sept. 22. The entry fee is $20, which buys you one cigar, one drink and “light fare.”
According to the Virginia Public Access Project, the group filed as a political action committee in May but as of the end of June had just $493 in the bank. In other words, don’t expect any illegal and expensive Cuban cigars at this gig. It’s likely to be more of a Swisher Sweet affair.
