Pick of the day: Super educator helps students fly
Your recent story on Doris Ennis (“Lifetime in education shapes ‘selfless’ leader,” Sept. 1 news story) profiled an American treasure and icon of our community.
Ennis has moved mountains, one grain at a time, through her humble and selfless service to our city and the children in its schools.
Many of us in Roanoke admire and follow Ennis’ precedent of kid-centered thinking and results-oriented action.
Though she has held titles from teacher to principal and director to superintendent, she has remained, first and foremost, an educator.
Teacher quality is the No. 1 school-controlled variable in student achievement, and Ennis personifies its highest caliber.
I once told a group of teachers that Superman probably owns a pair of Doris Ennis pajamas.
Thank you for celebrating her example, her influence and the magic she continues to perform.
May she continue to serve as an example for all of us who have accepted the call to teach and to strive for her example.
