Don’t freak over parking fees
Patrons of the Roanoke Civic Center can easily avoid even a modest charge.
Robyn Schon, general manager of the Roanoke Civic Center, during a meeting Monday with the Roanoke City Council uttered what could be fighting words: “We’re thinking about charging for parking.” Gasp!
Before all the occupiers of free, front-door parking spaces unite to plot the firing of bazookas to deflate Schon’s trial balloon, consider this:
Paid parking wouldn’t be for all events. Just the big ones that cause Orange Avenue, Williamson Road and Interstate 581 to double as parking lots when too many cars try to jam into the civic center’s too few spaces.

I have no problem with paying for parking when attending events, but as if traffic isn’t bad enough now, I can see it becoming a nightmare as people try pulling into the wrong lot by mistake without knowing it’s for pre-paid parking only.
