Post-college success isn’t all about the first paycheck

In its Oct. 10 editorial, “What’s that degree really worth?,” The Roanoke Times discussed the wage outcomes report just published by the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia. The SCHEV database provides basic information about the immediate employment and salary experiences of alumni who remain in Virginia after graduation or enroll in further educational pursuits here. Overall, the report shows clearly that institutions of higher education in Virginia continue to have a profound and positive impact on the commonwealth and its residents — indeed, demonstrating that a college degree still matters.

But prospective college students and their families should be wary of only using information about salaries immediately after graduation when choosing an institution of higher learning and a field of study.
