Society ignores biblical wisdom to its peril
By Charles A. Harris
Frederick Fuller of Roanoke set forth his opinion and plea to “unstupid ourselves and … get our ignorant minds away from the Bible” (“Keep the Bible out of politics,” commentary, Sept. 12). The Bible’s only legitimate place is to dictate religious liturgy and is otherwise irrelevant for the decisions of life, according to Fuller. Rather than refer to orthodox teachings of Christ, he can cite only abuses of the Christian faith as his supporting argument, which is analogous to citing malpractice cases as a justification to discard the teachings of medicine and surgery.
Harris, of Radford, is a practicing general surgeon at the Carilion New River Valley Medical Center in Christiansburg.

Charles Harris assures us, “…its teaching has permeated the hearts and minds of the faithful, who number more than Fuller realizes, and its influence will be felt in daily choices, political and otherwise, as well as on Nov.6.” Which will assure an Obama victory if true!
So does this surgeon look to biblical scripture to determine that a new mother who has a make child is ready to resume intercourse earlier than one who has a female child (as written in the Old Testament)-or does modern science show this to be a fallacy? The “wisdom” of the bible also permits concubines, multiple wives, and says slavery is OK. Gay marriage and abortion aren’t mentioned-so saying opposition to these is based on scipture is a stretch-just like denying all the dark things that scipture does contain.
