3 – Brian, forgive my ignorance (it’s not my field), but are those problems primarily in coastal areas? It’s doubtful that any flooding we have in the Roanoke Valley would be salt water. Are there other problems (aside from salt water) that we would have to worry about?

Obama’s base loves it, I’m sure. This, the ad with the children, and the one comparing voting for Obama with her first time…they play well with many on the left.
But stuff like this can turn off many moderates and independents. In a tight race like this one, their votes are critical. I question the wisdom of releasing ads like this, especially this close to the election. But I hope the Obama suppoters continue to do so, and show us just how low they will go.
Does anyone know how it would voting work if and probably power is not back on in states, like NY NJ and any other. What if people cant get to the polls or voting machines down?

This nation may or may not choose to replace Obama, but there is no good reason to vote for Romney and that is why this meme of Obama’s failures, Obama’s cover-ups, Obama’s lies, and Obama’s policy being wrong is pushed from daylight till dark. Romney has nothing to offer except to the ABO crowd. Hate is an ugly thing. It has made them dishonest, insulting, divisive and just plain forgetful too.

Elections are the province of the states. Ask the state what it plans to do. My guess is they will desperately try to hold some kind of election, even without power, but I doubt any has a true contingency (i.e. paper ballots). We are not big on planning or back up apparently.

A campaign that sticks to the high ground and does not answer negative ads, fight back against attacks and refuse to lay down for distorted views will only lose. People SAY they want such campaigns and such candidates and such leaders, but the polls do not bear that out. There is no “high ground” in this campaign. I concede that, which is why I didn’t claim it by pretending my candidate of choice was offering his bus for the aid effort.
Romney keeps talking about cutting out tax loopholes as part of his economic plan but refuses to identify any specifics. I wonder if this one would be on the chopping block?

– The President has little control over the prices of gasoline or food. Commodities like these are priced by the market. There are things that Congress and the President can do policy-wise to influence prices like corn subsidies and fuel economy that have a long-term effect but in the short term, not really. – Most states aren’t. There are a few GOP Governors who are putting party ideology ahead of helping their citizens and that’s unfortunate. The ACA is the law of the land and they can cry all they want about it but they’ll come around eventually. Citizens who have already benefited from the ACA are happy with it.
To #4 (89Hoo): It doesn’t have to be salt water to cause problems (though salt water is worse). Even fresh water that’s mildly contaminated with dirt can cause problems. At work we regularly clean high-voltage gloves and insulated extension poles/ladders to ensure that mildly conductive dirt from somewhere doesn’t cause hazardous electrical tracking.
That’s the nice thing about using air as an insulation material (which we do for most “medium-voltage” 13 kV lines in this area and almost all “high-voltage” 200+ kV lines). It doesn’t get contaminated or wear out. As long as something doesn’t knock conductors out of position, things basically last forever. And even if above-ground cables do get knocked over, they’re much easier and quicker to fix. Utilities in NYC are going to spend LOTS more money fixing things up after Sandy than our utilities did after the derecho.

Michael, for clarification, as I should have known how words are parsed here, “turned it around” is not the same as fixed all our problems. Those are two different statements.
We long ago established that the President does not set gas prices.
Your concern for the Iraqi people is touching, but WE are not still over there dying and being maimed by the score.
There does remain a “boatload of unemployed people” but the jobs hemorrhage due to the economic crash that was raging in 2009 has stopped and we are adding jobs again.
IDK why Europe is laughing at anything, but they are not cheering for a Romney win and that I know. Obama is still held in high esteem in Europe.
You may never believe this, but there was much more to saving the US auto industry than the “union buddies”. Much more.

….As a child, teen, and college student, I sincerely believed that personhood, life, rights, and the soul all began at fertilization. I was honestly opposed to abortion because I believed it was murder. It had nothing to do with being anti-woman or anti-sex. I thought that the pro-life movement writ large – the major pro-life organizations, leaders, and politicians – were similarly genuine. I thought that they, like myself, simply wanted to “save the lives of unborn babies.”
I have come to the conclusion that I was a dupe.
What I want to share here is how I came to this realization. And if you, reader, are one of those who opposes abortion because you believe it is murder and you want to save the lives of unborn babies, well, I hope to persuade you that the pro-life movement is not actually your ally in this, that you have been misled, and that you would be more effective in decreasing the number of abortions that occur if you were to side with pro-choice progressives. @25 – I’m waiting until the FBI and State dept. investigations are completed. The administration has said from day one that the attack is being investigated and that it’s important not to rush to conclusions before beforehand. It’s absurd to expect the administration to “come clean” about the attacks until those investigations are completed. That’s the whole point of doing an investigation in the first place! I think it’s important to get all of the facts together and make an assessment rather than to rush to judgement. Like Defense Secretary Panetta said last week, there’s a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking going on in the rush to place blame.
Regardless, politicizing the attacks and murders is still shameful.
As for the states – fair enough. The law is the law. If they have a leg to stand on then the courts can sort it out. At the end of the day, the ACA has already improved healthcare and will continue to do so. That’s all that matters.

Bush was caught, almost red-handed with all of it, rendition, secret prisons, torture and cherry picked intel…and what happened?

Thank you 89Hoo, sort of. I grant you that a lot of voices of protest die back down when it is their party in power, but I do not think it is a “glass house” so much as the reality of limited time and reality (at least that is my hope).
If you can remember the Watergate hearings, Iran/Conta and the Clinton ______Gates, you saw how the circus and the system worked. At the “best case” scenario, a President resigns, but what really did that do for the nation? What did ANY of them do for the nation? Did we learn anything? Did we really change anything?
The systems, from the lowliest secretary in a 20 employee firm to the White House and Congress, is all the same. There is a chance nothing will happen, there is a chance you can get away with it and if not, the repercussions are only going to be so bad due to the system. Sure, the most egregious and indefensible, like Cunningham, Abramoff, Kozlowski, Traficant, and Maddoff go to prison, but many more don’t.
We may hold someone as responsible and blame them as we see fit, but the system is different.
It is a lot like the whole Romney story. He is cheered, applauded and respected for gaming the business, investor, LBO and tax structures to get very very rich. A poor toothless simple-minded fool is excoriated for scamming food stamps. A local business does not pay employee tax withholding or insurance deducted and they close and move on to start over in a “new” business and the employees are SOL. A wealthy CEO can tell employees (who need their paycheck to survive) who to vote for and if they don’t like the outcome, shut the business down and start over, no sweat and the workers are again SOL with no recourse.
On and on it goes. Look at the Boy Scout files just released? Fighting gay boys and gay leaders while literally covering for pedophiles in their ranks. It is the way of the world and it is not as simple as “glass houses”.
And one more thing, the Bush/Cheney administration was never held accountable for ANYTHING except the scapegoated Libby. Not torture, not rendition, not secret prisons, not disappeared people, not ignoring intel, not anything. Do you, for a freaking moment think that Obama will not be held accountable if Issa can prove he “denied” any security or aid? Really? Again, as we saw with Clinton, not bloody likely. The double standard in this country is reality too.
It matters who you vote for, it matters a lot this time, but the system is the system all the same.

But that too is “the system”. Ask OJ, not being convicted of a crime does not mean anything. Ask Bush/Cheney. The word “skate” still implies guilt and you have no proof of guilt. If such can be sufficiently proved, yes, President Obama should be held accountable. As it is, there is no evidence at all and he is still considered guilty by many, including some here. For some people, all the facts in the world don’t matter (Bush) and for those same people, no facts at all doesn’t matter either.
A “low-level peon” would not have the authority to deny help, to ignore requests for more security or “cover-up” the communications. The mistakes made were serious, a fair and credible investigation needs to happen and the chips fall where they may. This nation has had enough of no one being held accountable.
