Americans ready to secede
People from almost half of the states have filed petitions with the White House asking permission to secede from the union. The Washington Post has the story:
From states across the country, Americans have filed petitions on the White House website seeking to secede from the Union and form new state governments.
While most of the petitions come from states that supported Mitt Romney in last week’s election, a few swing states and even the deep blue Northeast are represented.
Petitions have been filed for Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.
Virginia, capital of the last big secession movement, has not yet filed a petition. How about it, RT readers disappointed with last week’s election outcome? Should the commonwealth and other states look to go their own way?
View all of the White House petitions on a variety of topics. There’s even one about ending the “war on coal.”

I shudder to think what would happen if we enter WWIII and need these people to stand for America. Personally, I would say let them go and we can form a North and South United States and get this hate over with. I am more than willing to relocate.
Well, Sandi, since Virginia has not filled a petition to secede, you’d be relocating to a state that HAS filed, and the US would be unable to count on YOUR support in the next War to End All Wars. Is that what you are saying?
I have said for some time that this country is too big and diverse to be governed as a single nation from D.C. The country needs to be divided along the boundries of the Mississippi River….Most of the states east of the mississippi have different interests and needs that those west of the mississippi river…..Urban vesus rural….
Let them go. From what I see written in these columns we would be the only United states because your group would give in, drop arms.
To be really honost I do see another civil war comin end this one way or another. To much divide for any talks. The country is just getting deeper and deeper divided where it only going to take one thing and its on.
Do you really think Virginia won’t? Had I the wherewithal, I would have relocated north long ago.
Can only hope it does, then I wont have to relocate, just get ready for the fight.
I don’t think it should come to a “fight”. But I also do not think the United States of America is just going to quietly let you all leave with the federal land, resources and military bases for free either. Why should they?
Could we duly note that I said “personally”. As an American citizen who believes in the United States of America, I would never “vote” for such a stupid, childish, selfish tantrum to come to life. It is an asinine fantasy formulated by angry, IMO soulless people, not a reality on the horizon.
Thats why if ther is such a thing you have to take any military installation first and put it in the states hands.
Would this happen dont know, can this happen, sure.
There are militias out thier right now that are thousands strong just ready for the flag to be dropped.
Oh by the way” why should they leave it for free. They give everything else away for free. Just pose an an illegal and get whatever I want. Even vote.
Herb, you might make me see it your way yet.
On the lighter side…anyone see the nascar brawl yesterday….
Quite frankly, these people need to grow up. This IS 2012, not 50 years ago. This country has become more diverse and will continue to do so. The ‘old angry white male’ vote is no longer relevant in the world of today.
The ONLY one responsible for the failure of the GOP is the GOTP. Your loudmouth extremists po’d just about everyone off – women, minorities, young, and in my case, older independants and moderate GOP people. YOU and YOU alone have left a trail of stupidity and ignorance and hatred in your wake.
I think it’s highly ironic that most of the red states also fall in the list of the least educated. Ironic, but very, very telling.
This is 2012. The GOP is going to have to get its proverbial head out of its behind and realize that 1 now minority segement of this country is NOT representative of the others put together. In the case of Virginia alone, look at where the diversity lies and you’ll see why you are no longer relevant.
Fiscal reponsibility is an admirable attitude for any and all. Hatred, ignorance, stupidity, and arrogance is not. As long as the GOP espouses the last 4, you will continue to lose.
Why don’t they leave and take Romney with them. This is of course the Republicans. They could join Newt’s moon colony. Romney could tell them where to hide their money.
The funny part is that after years of braying about, those of you who want the Republicans to pack up their tents and leave seem to have forgotten that they will be taking the vast majority of the wealth in the nation with them. Isn’t that the inequity you’ve been upset about?
This is more amusing and curious than anything else. I seriously doubt these are actually official states making these petitions…more likely independent groups of people within the states. They don’t actually represent the states in an official capacity.
And I’m not sure how serious a secessionist movement is that asks for permission. When we broke from England, w declared, we didn’t ask.
Wow talk about lip service. If i said Obama got the d black vote because he is black and those ppl were most of the welfare and uneducated group because you want something for nothing because you think we owe you something i would nevet be posted. So lets see.
Ad u said before this country wont last stock up anf get ready its coming soonet then we think.
I agree 89. The talk was something that happened several years sgobin South Car. Where a group was trying to get ppl to move to certain areas of the country to win local seats and push for this.
With todays technology i dont think this would ever happen.
Jkid is correct that we are changing but when you are changing in the direction of taking from the ones that worked for thier future and giving it to ones that have hands out because they think we owe them somethng thats Greece big time. I see it in a lot of young ones today. They want to start out in management without having to earn anything. The next few months will tell. Its already starting a domino effect with businesses laying off and cutting back to part time.
2 big issues are going to sink jobs, taxes and obamacare. Watch and see.
I can’t believe I’m actually reading all of this, and that all of you have spent so much time with it. Secession? Really? Oh, please. The reason this story has legs is because it is part of the media’s hand-wringing over the election results. This is a chance to once again discredit any sane, well-reasoned opposition to the Obama administration. What better way to do that than to paint all of that opposition with the same brush. In this case, the losers want to pick up their marbles and go home like a bunch of children. Sorry to disappoint. We just lost, that’s all. We’ll get over it. As I recall, liberals have lost an election or two as well. And when they do, they threaten to go to Canada. Of course, we’ll never hear about THAT in the press.
Bill Van Velzer, not for nothing, but if you pay attention, the people doing that “painting” are the people supporting the secession movement and telling us why. I could not make this stuff up if I tried. Sadly, I don’t have to.
#19 Actually, Bill, I did hear of liberals threatening to go to Canada during the 2000 and 2004 elections. At least in their cases it made some sense.
Thanks for not disappointing, Virginia secessionists. Our petition is up, and already 1,654 signatures.
That’s a shame…I guess Sandi will be moving on now. Wisconsin’s nice, Sandi; I can recommend some beautiful places. Cold though…
Blah, blah, blah. It was an election. Someone wins and someone loses. That’s the way it goes–get over it, already. At least the secession movement of 1860 made sense from someone’s perspective. If there’s any secession today that worries me it’s the one where business secedes from the union and moves overseas. If you want to get a preview, check out the businesses leaving California on a weekly basis. The math is simply not in their favor. And now they’ve passed another round of “temporary” tax hikes on the job creating class. Good luck with that. This same mentality is coming to a neighborhood near you. Their will be other elections. And when the economy finally grinds to a halt because even the liberal rich folks have had enough confiscation of their wealth, the other party will be waiting. And the wheel keeps on turning.
No, I signed these three petitions:
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/strip-citizenship-everyone-who-signed-petition-secede-and-exile-them/ZbMjcwPf
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/keep-united-states-united/ZfpkwtSZ
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/deport-everyone-signed-petition-withdraw-their-state-united-states-america/dmQl1bXL
If “the other party” does not get a grip on reality, no, I do not believe they will “be waiting”, I think they will be like the Whigs. Gone.
IMHO, I can see Texas really trying this. The are almost self sufficiant and refused fed. dollars. If they went out on there own it might work. They would not have to abide by any federal law that would mandate without funds. This in itself is hugh. They must get a number of other states to go along and stand fast, because this would not end well, but then maybe thats Obama’s plan, divide and then conquer.
I have know idea but I really can’t believe this but it is cathing traction and even gotten the white house a little antsy.
#22. Oh wow. I went in to look at this petition.
It is up to almost 6000 but dont you see what this is.
This is being put out by the White house to track any person that would
sign this and might be a threat to the US. This is a bait and switch site.
A petition would NEVER come from the White house, It would come from the state. Talk about spying on your own people. Where are the people at now whaen they were crying over Bush’s wiretap deals.
This is worse.
Watch out for those black helicopters Herb!
25 – kinda contradicts what you said in the first post, though, Sandi. Oh well, people change.
(for the record, I think the whole petition thing is silly and will not be signing anything)
It IS silly, but if someone wants to indulge their fantasy, why not join them?
Obama did say he was going to change America. As divided as we are now (and getting worse every day), I would say he’s kept his word.
#28 Herb, doubling up on the tinfoil.
29 and 33. Thats what they thought before the civil war.
People became nieve and thousands were killed.
I am just saying that the rights of states are being stripped which is exactly what the founding fathers did NOT want. That is why our constitution is based on states and ppl not govt which seems to be the problem. Those that do not heed history are doomed to repeat it.
Do you really think that as it gets worse that nothing will happen. I got a bridge if you believe that.
It is not Obama’s fault that America is divided and it sure is not his fault idiots want to petition to secede! That is a meme, but he has not done or said anything to create it.
What I think is that when things “get worse” we are supposed to pull together as a nation to face them. That half the nation has decided they just don’t want to and started making things up to stir up anger, resentment and hostility for political gain is the fruit of some ugly trees. THAT is what I think.
Why am I not surprised. The right wing were not gracious losers in 2008, gracious winners in 2010 or gracious losers in 2012. You will indeed burn the house down rather than allow it to move.
Sadly, I think America’s best days may be behind us. We no longer have people who believe in anything except their POV.
Dana Milbank has an excellent piece on this topic that points out that it makes fiscal sense for the blue states to let the red states go. Blue states now subsidize red states, which receive far more in federal spending than they pay in taxes.
I loved the petition that said they had to pay their fair share of the national debt before they go…
I would have loved to pay my fair share 4 yrs ago, but the blue states need to take the difference from the last 4 yrs.
I am just saying that there is a lot of rumble out there and something
is coming down the pipe. Just dont know what it is yet.
It is your own echo Herb and you need to learn to distinguish it, and your shadow from reality. The right wing is killing itself. While I am grateful in a political sense, I still live in the community and would like to see people get better, not worse.
As far as fair share of the national debt, I would support a petition to deport all those responsible for running up the debt. We’d have an entire metropolitan area with no one in it, and lot’s of available real estate in the Washington DC area.
89Hoo, I suppose you have forgotten “The Little Red Hen”? Just ask them who is to blame…
“Not I,” barked the lazy dog.
“Not I,” purred the sleepy cat.
“Not I,” quacked the noisy yellow duck.
Everyone SAYS they dislike Congress, everyone SAYS that they have done us wrong (and the facts do prove that tale) and yet they keep sending them back to Washington. Whose fault is that, in the end?
41. We would have a lot of beach front because a lot of those are illegal harbor’s.
Sorry Sandi, I think the better days are over and thats my honest opionion.
I hope they dont give in and the fiscal cliff is the end…Then we will see were people stand. My family and I will be just fine because I worked hard all my life and made smart moves and NO ONE can take that away. I Earned it but thats a word that is lost within the Democratic dictionary.
I have been talking about supporting a succession for years, and I proudly serve in the armed forces. It’s not just about an election! Our veterans fought and died to make this country free from a strong government rein, and now the ungrateful people want to go right back to that kind of oppression. I say, there are already plenty of socialist countries, go live in one of those.
42 Sandi, the Little Red Hen’s problem was that she asked. We KNOW who is responsible for the debt. Deport them all, don’t even bother asking.
Herb, I do not believe you really understand what “the end” would entail and I have serious doubts how long any of us would last if it came. Money is worthless when their is no financial structure. Odd how you seem to think no one else has worked hard or earned anything. You do know there are talented, hard working, honest and even wealthy Democrats in this nation, don’t you?
Gee, when was the last war that our military fought to “make this country free from a strong government rein“? I don’t think some of us understand the Constitution we have lived under for over 200 years.
47 – could you elaborate, please?
47..Thats the problem..so many have forgotton what we did for this country and now its moving towards socialism, and yes Sandi I understand that there are many democratic hardworkers out there. The problem is that your party has aliegned itself with the gimmie crowd. Ex: Ocuppy wall st,Enviromentalist killing jobs, illegal amnisty, welfare, I can on and on but that is dependency not what this country was founded on. So if
it is going to go over the cliff then so be it. That will maybe give our kids a fresh start without a 20 trillion $ debt and 30 milliona out of work. What ppl dont understand is that I am in the position to talk to many of companies and most not all are planning cut back and layoffs. How does this help the country. This does nothing but put more burden on the tax payer and IT CAN NOT BE Sustained.
Do we? Do we really? I don’t think we have even agreed on that, obvious though it is.
#37 C., federal dollars collected & dispersed are but one factor/observation. (I offer no opinion here on secession, per se).
Amongst others, would you care to discuss public union (pension & other) obligations that cannot be sustained? Which states they are in? Which cities in which states have thusly declared bankruptcy?
Who will bail them out? If printed money, who most feels the effect?
And of course I see no adjustment in your comment or cited article for per-capita consideration, or the regressive effect of depleted income/higher taxes.
I am sure most states you reference would be glad to keep their money & call it even.
I’m talking about the revolutionary war! One of the biggest problems with this age is that everyone thinks that this country is founded on a stone foundation. Wrong! Most every other country throughout history that was in existence less than 300yrs barely get a mention in the history books. America was (WAS) the last free country there was to run to. I’m not saying splitting from the US, I’m saying push out those that want to change what we built over 200yrs ago. Like the frontiersmen years ago, I’ll risk dyeing outside the governments protection, free from its socialistic oppression rather than watching my children grow up making the right decisions and become successful only to have the government steel what they have worked so hard for and put it into some government program that takes being responsible for your actions from those who make bad decisions.
#37 C., does it cost less to build an interstate bridge in Alabama than in Michigan?
Does it cost less to maintain/sustain a military base in Mississippi than in Ohio?
Will not the spending of federal funds for these (and myriad other) be greater per capita in states with less population & less taxable income?
The argument you cite is bogus. And IMO (at best) inconsistent from those who stress federal perspective of these United States.
Why do you assume the so called “blue states” would not be the population centers of the newly separated Untied States? They are the reason Obama was elected and if the map is drawn to account for population as opposed to established land mass, there is a lot of blue.
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mejn/election/2012/
This whole thing is silly and only adding to those who have a delusion of the nation being behind their beliefs “if only” you could get rid of the rest of the voters. You are wrong.
