The SPCA’s renewed focus on prevention
Combined management of the no-kill shelter and the regional pound brought unwanted distractions.
Even if the Roanoke Valley SPCA and the regional pound were separated by a mile-wide moat, they would remain inextricably connected. Each link in the chain that binds them together is a careless owner who can’t be bothered to spay or neuter a pet, preferring instead to dump unwanted puppies and kittens and pretend they are someone else’s problem.
Despite that tragic reality, SPCA officials recognize changes are necessary so that the organization can better focus on adoptions, recruitment of foster families to take temporary charge of animals and, perhaps most important, spay and neuter programs.
