Wednesday letters
Contraceptives, deficits and television in today’s letters to the editor.
Pick of the day: The elephant that ISN’T in the room
I want my party back. This country needs my party back.
I’m talking about the Republican Party I supported for years – the party that first identified pollution as a major threat and helped to create the Environmental Protection Agency.
The party that first identified the need for health insurance for all Americans.
The party that would never embrace (still less, attempt to legislate) easy fixes to complex social problems.
And the party that, more than anything else, was renowned for sound business leaders – people who understood investment, who knew how to create and manage budgets, and who were far too smart to subscribe to phony schemes that wrote off increased revenues in the face of increased costs.
Where are these cool-headed leaders when America has never needed them more?
I was in Greece last summer, and believe me, we do not want our country to be where those citizens are.
We must put America’s fiscal house in order.
But we will never do it by tying our leaders’ hands with “no new tax” pledges.
I want my party back!
Maybe if we all call loud enough, the grand old elephant will come out from wherever he’s been hiding.
JUDY CLARK
ROANOKE

Hear hear, Judy!
The Repiblicans have no more Linwood Holtons, Caldwell Butlers, John Daltons, Everett Dirksens, Jack Kemps, Bob Doles, Gerald Fords, men of honor and integrity who understood the political process and had the best interests of the state and the ountry at heart.
#2 Right. And Terry McAuliffe for governor.
#2 – “… men of honor and integrity who understood the political process and had the best interests of the state and the ountry at heart.”
And we ALL know that the Democratic party is full of them, Right dave?
Well at least you don’t make any “snide remarks” here like I do, Michael.
Nothing snide about it, Sandi. It’s sarcasm.
Look it up.
#6 Michael, buddy, sarcastic and snide remarks have the same intent, to embarrass, humiliate or verbally cut somebody. So call it what you want.
My comment wasn’t intended to embarass, humiliate, or verbally cut Dave, gdad. It was pointing out that the Dems aren’t as perfect as you all like to make them out to be.
Had it been, you can bet your last dollar the mods here wouldn’t have allowed it to be posted.
Thanks for playing, though.
I took your advice, given your denial, it wasn’t “sarcasm” either.

“ a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain“
#9 You and gdad must rely on the same dictionary.
Again, it wasn’t intended as a “cut” to dave. If it were, I would have stated it as such…and the mods wouldn’t have allowed it.
Have a nice day, Sandi.
Excellent point Michael, we all know the moderators never let a snide remark or a “cut” through the system.
I can’t speak for Gdad, but I ALWAYS consult Merriam-Webster when in question, and I allow for the multiple meanings and nuance of words as well as whom they are from to inform my opinion and response.
But I think “cutting” is often found elsewhere too.
