Helen Dragas should resign
The UVa rector would avoid a messy fight in the legislature and allow the university to move forward.
Two questions lie at the heart of the controversy over Helen Dragas’ reappointment to the University of Virginia Board of Visitors.
First, does her role in the removal of President Teresa Sullivan make it difficult for Dragas to serve effectively?

The truth is that UVa has an vision crisis. Is it to be Jefferson’s academic village or is it to be Virginia’s leading university in a 21st Century world? This division of opinion is hurting the Commonwealth.
And the Governor is not helping by standing aside and hoping for a good outcome. The board members appointed are not people that would be good for any board of a major university. They certainly would not be considered by Duke or Princeton or the University of Michigan as qualified to be directors..providing strong forward looking direction and seeking involvement of leading faculty in that effort.
Virginia is losing ground in the emerging global and national economy. New direction will be lead in part by our national universities and unfortunately Virginia is not looking for that kind of leadership…
Fred, U.Va. is a public university and, unfortunately, most appointments are based on politics and cash. Duke and Princeton are private. Makes a difference in the kinds of appointments you get.
