I learned a long time ago to take anything The RT or CNN touts as reliable analysis with a grain of salt. Fast and furious has nothing to do with the problem of deranged individuals killing innocent children.

In all my years, I have never met anyone in law enforcement that thinks private gun ownership by lawful individuals is a bad idea - ever. I believe they are out there, but they are most likely influenced by politics and have to answer to idiots like Michael Bloomberg.

It's time we realized that we have to be responsible for our own safety. Police do not defend, they respond. They cannot be everywhere at once, and more gun control isn't going to stop these kinds of crimes. The only way to stop these terrible acts of violence is to catch the perpetrator in the act and deal with them with the same ruthless violence they intended to inflict on innocents. If providing that kind of protection to the children of this nation is out of the question, then we're doomed anyway. I feel certain that this will happen again - we need to prepare for it.

#2 I see no reasonable argument against trained teachers, principles, janitors, etc., being armed in our schools.

IMO, the school districts should come up with training programs, along with law enforcement & the NRA.

Tell 3000 dead Mexicans about the "inflamed" F&F story. Tell it to the Terry family. Tell it to the gun shop owners abused. Tell it to citizens in border states denied their rights.

We have not lost. We must protect our children and our Constitutional rights.

And, alas....yes, we must realize terrible things happn. Always have & will. And, not to sell our freedoms (and tools against such) for false security and power grabs.

Sandi,

Arming teachers would not require any funding. What makes you think that the government should pay for it, even if that ends up being the (or part of the) solution?

I'm armed.. the government didn't pay for my gun, training or permit. It shouldn't pay for one for a teacher, either.

Please refer to Warren v. District of Columbia and DeShaney v. Winnebago County Department of Social Services.

I suppose it boils down to what we believe is a "viable solution" and what is not.

No, the NRA did not "make this individual perform this horrible crime" but it is hard to miss the NRA writing on the wall when time after time they have fought and lobbied against laws that law enforcement and sensibility tell us might well have kept the guns out of his hands.

Even the big right wing inflamed story into the failed and flawed "Fast and Furious" BATFE operation shows us the effect of the NRA in fighting what we need to be doing.

I do not believe that the NRA or the Governor offered a viable solution. Certainly neither offered any information on how we fund them, even if you want to say that more guns is the answer to gun violence. That just seems like surrendering to the madness and admitting that we lost.

So the governor was wrong in at least entertaining the idea of allowing armed individuals to assist in providing an additional level of safety to our children while they are in school?

Why is it that everyone appears to believe that the govenment is solely responsible for providing for our safety. We, as American citizens, need to come together to figure out what needs to be done to appropriately balance safety with the reality that there are evil people out there who are bent on harming others. What do we do about that, and how do we force our elected "leaders" to do the things that we want them to do?

Some will call for more gun control legislation, while others will call for less. Neither of those approaches will address the problem of dealing with deranged individuals whose only thought is to cause as much mayhem as possible.

The NRA has been vilified in the Roanoke Times, as well as thousands of other places immediately after this most recent mass killing of completely innocent children. Did the NRA or a gun make this individual perform this horrible crime? I certainly don't think so.

What the NRA did do (as well as the Governor) was offer a viable solution to providing greater safety in our schools. While a lot of folks don't like the proposed solution, it is a potential solution nonetheless. I found it pretty amazing that the RT made absolutely no mention of the NRA "press conference" yesterday. The solutions suggested by the NRA included the use of the vast NRA resources to work toward making our schools safer. I would have thought that the potential redirection of those resources away from lobbying efforts would have delighted the RT. Apparently not.
