The fall of Gen. Petraeus and the military mystique
By John Freivalds
Gen.David Petraeus’ fall from grace was inevitable as the nation starts to wind down from more than a decade of wars, the creation of a terror economy and the adulation of generals that was its end result. Few military objectives were reached, save the killing of Osama binLaden. Iraq is tied closer to Iran than it ever was, and Afghanistan will revert to a warlord state. And al-Qaida has popped up elsewhere and everywhere.
Petraeus became a demigod due to the unpopularity of both the Iraq and Afganistan wars, which, like Vietnam, were unwinnable to begin with. However, both President Bush and President Obama needed to put a positive spin on it, and Petraeus filled the bill; plaster Petraeus’ name and smiling image to an unwinnable situation and hope for the best. This is what Jill Kelley’s sister did to try to win back custody of her children by getting devoted family man Petraeus to write a letter on official stationery to the judge.
