William Hopkins’ legacy
The onetime state Senate majority leader from Roanoke was the rare politician who left government better than he found it.
Roanokers today might be unaware of the work former state Senate Majority Leader William B. Hopkins Sr. did to enrich their lives.
Hopkins died Tuesday in his sleep at the age of 90, his legislative work long behind him. The benefits of his labors, though, still are felt in the greater efficiency of state government, and greater opportunities for children in Southwest Virginia to expand their horizons.
