Legislators should make transportation, education, health care and retaining a moratorium on uranium mining their priorities this year.
A majority of legislators convening for their annual winter session today are already counting down the days until they can go home and campaign. This year, all 100 seats in the House of Delegates are up for election; statewide campaigns provide more distractions. Virginia’s political calendar inhibits attention to long-term responsibilities. Mischief can be depended upon to fill the vacuum.
Each January, we summon up renewed hopes that state leaders will finally embrace progress through investments in transportation infrastructure, public education and the health care safety net. As reality sets in, we plead with lawmakers to avoid detours that inflict suffering and despair on their constituents and generations of Virginians to come.
