And now a word from Dr. King
We’ve tried to get permission to publish one of Martin Luther King’s speeches on Monday, the holiday celebrating the life of the civil rights leader. Copyright law makes this a difficult task, and it’s not looking good. We will, however, run our usual collection of quotes, and on Sunday we will publish an editorial reflecting on his belief in the power of the ballot box.
Meanwhile, if you would like to listen to one of his speeches, you can find his acceptance speech on the website at nobelprize.org. We’re assuming the Nobel folks either have permission or don’t need it.

I understand needing to safeguard his legacy, but it should not be so hard to gain permission to use Dr. King’s words to memorialize him and keep his struggle and sacrifice in memory. That is just plain sad.
But will they also publish quotations from Lee and Jackson on their day (which I believe is today, now that it is after midnight)? They did say some interesting things. Lee was not a speech-maker though.
