Elmwood should have stayed a park

By E. Duane Howard

In The Roanoke Times’ editorial “Short takes,” Dec. 22, the editorial staff characterizes “The next life for Elmwood Park.” I would like to predict what that life will be after the work under way ends and why.

How does forcing one to spend money to eat and drink at park events make it more enjoyable over bringing one’s own picnic lunch, a blanket on the ground, the family sitting around under the shade of the trees to enjoy the experience at events, the way it used to be?

Howard lives in Roanoke and is a former member of the Roanoke Parks and Recreation advisory board.

Some people just hate change of any kind. This venue will be first class and I for one can’t wait.

I don’t think Mr. Howard hates change, I think he just appreciated what Elmwood Park was and did not see the need to change what made it so charming even when no event was going on. I sincerely hope it does not lose all of that charm when this is done.
