Governor’s plan is worth a try

By John Long

I’ve been mulling Gov.Bob McDonnell’s new transportation funding plan, and I’ve had some trouble making up my mind. I see advantages and disadvantages, but in the end have concluded the idea is worth giving a try. At least it’s a daring, original proposal that, given some problems, is better than any other I’ve heard.

The last thing we need right now in our state fiscal policy is something “daring.” We need solid revenue streams that will enable the state to provide the kinds of services that we need to improve our long-term economic strength and the well-being of our citizens. The governor’s plan is little more than a gimmick. The disadvantages greatly outweigh the advantages. The gas tax should be brought up to a realistic level so that road projects can be paid for properly without raiding other areas of the budget.

Clue #1: “making us the only state without such a tax”- Oh and no problems there!
Clue #2: “sales tax would rise”- and the most regressive tax gets worse!
Clue #3: “vehicle registration fees would go up”- What a benefit!
Clue #4: “revenues would be earmarked”- Unlike the gas tax.
Clue #5: “for most of us this won’t save us money overall”- But that doesn’t matter.
Clue #6: “you don’t want it falling through the nearest bridge”- If all else fails, scare ‘em!
Clue #7: “which hit consumption but not income or savings”- kinda like the gas tax does…
Clue #8: “state taxes are generally less onerous than federal levies”= Why there is only income, property, vehicle, sales, fees…Yep, surely “less onerous”.
Clue #9: “Just look at California the last few decades.”-Because not being able to raise taxes can really be a bad thing.
Clue #10: “the gas tax is moving toward eventual obsolescence”- Well of course, that explains the other 49 states…oh wait.

Oh Lord, I cannot go on. This is just plain sad. And typical.

If you could give President Obama (or any Democrat) even half of the benefit of doubt you give the GOTP, this nation would be a better place.
