No need to freak

No child will leave summer vacation behind in Roanoke unless his family wants him to.

Last week, Roanoke Superintendent Rita Bishop announced she is making plans to extend the school year by six weeks to help students enrich their reading and math skills. While Bishop just as quickly added that the program would be optional, that message failed to register.

Moaning, groaning and gnashing of teeth ensued once students and parents caught word of an extended school year through the modern-day rumor mill, social media. Why not just suck dry the last bit of childhood?
