Running for cover on transportation
Referenda, particularly those limited to one part of the state, won’t solve transportation needs.
We are sympathetic to the predicament of a bipartisan group of legislators in Hampton Roads who are pressing for a referendum on a 1 percent regional sales tax for transportation projects.
Much like Del. Lacey Putney, I-Bedford, who attempted a statewide sales tax referendum last year to bolster funding for roads, education and mental health services, the Hampton Roads lawmakers are desperate to conjure up a plan with even a slim chance of passage in the General Assembly this year.

Remember when McDonnell assured us he had the answers to transportation funding?
His answers were more debt and tolls.
I ask this not having followed the transportation issue that closely, but has anyone proposed a transportation bill that did not involve more debt?
Del. Lacey Putney’s bill last year increased the sales tax to pay for roads, schools and mental health services without more debt. He hasn’t yet refiled that bill, but Sen. John Watkins has a bill to increase the gas tax rate, also without new debt.
But McDonnell the candidate, promised…
Thank you Christina.
