School security must be top priority

Field houses can wait at Roanoke County schools.

Schools and communities across the nation have security on their minds these days. Even the governor seeks ways to make schools safer. He has assembled a gargantuan, 45-member school safety task force to come up with recommendations.

Roanoke County school leaders also have been thinking about security. The challenge there, as it will be in most communities in this era of tight public budgets, is figuring out how to pay for improvements. If it means putting off construction of a couple of field houses, so be it.
