Thursday letters
Guns, mental health, Jell-O and more in today’s letters to the editor.
Pick of the day: Act to prevent gun violence
The League of Women Voters has long been in support of restrictions on gun ownership and use in the interest of public safety. We support the reinstatement of the national ban on assault weapons, and we support national controls on the sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines and armor-piercing bullets. These are killing machines and not legitimate weapons to be used for hunting or sport in civil society.
We have seen how they put our young children, their families and our first responders at unspeakable risk. We must do a better job of promoting gun violence prevention and mental health services to ensure the safety of our families and our communities. Gun sales should be regulated and registered. Owners must be accountable for the weapons they possess. Let us not let the opportunity to move on this issue slip away.
Please contact your state and national leaders to ask them to act now, before there is yet another horrific Sandy Hook or Virginia Tech massacre for us to mourn.

Dear Mr. Gibbs, Sir…..how did you produce your LTE? Quill pen on parchment paper?
How was it delivered? On horseback?
Did the founding fathers know of email, computers, blogs, or facebook (etc., etc., etc.)?
Are you aware China just passed “law” requiring internet users to register themselves with the government?
From Peeking, to Cairo……to Washington, D.C. (or the Roanoke city market)…..did the founding fathers anticipate social media?
By your questioning….do you have any 1st Amendment right to express your opinion today?
