I am entering on the history of a period rich in disasters, frightful in its wars, torn by civil strife, and even in peace full of horrors. Four emperors perished by the sword. There were three civil wars; there were more with foreign enemies; there were often wars that had both characters at once. There was success in the East, and disaster in the West.
How would you characterize your times?

The U.S. has a workbench type vice compressing it: Hollywood on one side of the country is like one jaw of the vice and Washington, D.C. being the other jaw of the vice on the other side of the country. Between the miscreants in those two cities, the life of the U.S. is being squeezed out it. Hollywood forces ‘anything to make a buck’ on us which has served to strip us of our core beliefs and values; and the elected officials in Washington who are so cowardly they fail to legislate and lead. Hollywood and Washington, D.C.; two cities filled with the most deplorable people in the country and yet the very ones telling us what we should do, think, and how we should feel about things. Turn off your TV and do not vote for an incumbent. It is time for a complete turnover in D.C., and just turn off the flow of your hard earned money, to Hollywood.
David, for whom do you speak? Have *your* values been stripped away by Hollywood? I don’t think mine have. Whose, then? And is it Rep. Griffith’s fault he can’t lead? These days leaders don’t survive primaries. We have the government we deserve.
In today’s piece “Gun right lost in a time warp” by Ken Conklin, Mr. Conklin states that “The Second Amendment was conceived within the context of the technology of the day, single-shot guns.”
This is in fact false.
Two examples of multi-shot guns from that time period:

It’s also interesting that Mr. Conklin uses a computer to suggest that modern weapons are not covered by the second amendment due to them not existing when it was written.
Perhaps folks will give up their guns when he goes back to using quills.
@3 Michael, because computers have been invented we should be able to own semi-automatic rifles?!
Where is the logic in that?
I’m simply using the exact same logic that is being used against owners of AR-15′s, Scott.
You say the founding fathers never envisioned rapid fire weapons because they didn’t exist at the time (which is false), so therefore modern weapons are not covered by the 2nd Amendment.
Logically, your argument is hogwash.
@5 Michael, actually, by that logic the internet could be regulated. Sheesh…
6 – yes, that has been suggested, and we should fight that as vigorously as we fight attempts to remove out other constitutional liberties. Thankfully, it’s the same people trying to do both, so we know who the real enemies of liberty are.
@7 89Hoo, please enlighten me. Who are the real enemies of liberty and who has tried to regular the internet?
P.S. you should copyright that phrase “real enemies of liberty” and put it on a bumper sticker or something.
Scott, the biggest enemy of liberty is the UN, who wants to regulate both the internet (free speech) and guns. So far, the US has resisted the first (but give them time…) and is embracing the latter.
It is now the law of the land. The 2A refers to arms common of the time. Police, homeowners, and yes criminals all use semiauto pistolas. They are protected.
#8 – “P.S. you should copyright that phrase “real enemies of liberty” and put it on a bumper sticker or something.”
It’s been done, Scott. They say “Obama/Biden 2012″.
