Pick of the day: Tailoring news to religious views is propaganda

I am compelled to respond to this letter (“Put news coverage to a morality test,” Feb. 14).

How can one reader ask the news media to filter the news according to her personal religious views? News is news. Why would you filter it?

The role of the media is supposedly to report the news in a straightforward manner (not that that happens much these days). If you put a filter on it, it becomes propaganda, and not news.

Obviously, the author is a Christian who views everything according to how she interprets the Bible. I would think that Orthodox Jews would consider that the American habit of cutting our hair, shaving and working on the Sabbath is “unbiblical” and heretical.

Thank goodness I live in a country where religious doctrine and theocracy do not rule my life. We are all citizens of America, and we are allowed to practice our citizenship free of the doctrines of all religions, and free to choose our own religion.

Supposedly, this is constitutionally guaranteed.
