Turning around a neighborhood
When seeing is believing: some facts on Roanoke’s second chances.
Skeptics of government spending might have questioned why Roanoke decided a few years back to pump more than $1 million into revitalizing crime-ridden Hurt Park. Or why last year city police didn’t just toss into jail five young drug dealers.
It was all about second chances for a neighborhood and its people.

These are great initiatives but will be limited unless businesses do their part. Government cannot and should not be relied on to be the only solution. Legitimate businesses need to invest in revitalizing communities like Hurt Park in order for them to thrive. We all benefit as a result.
