U.S. needs birth-to-5 education

President Obama’s call for a high-quality birth-to-age-5 education system is scientifically defensible and a strong challenge to the early childhood community of practi-tioners and policymakers.
Carefully designed and researched programs have been shown to improve school readiness, academic accomplishment and adult competence. Independent economic analyses have demonstrated a high rate of return on early educational investments.
Ramey, the originator and founding principal investigator of the Abecedarian Project, is a professor and distinguished research scholar at Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute.
