Gov. McDonnell needs to tell his party enough is enough in its expensive, alienating quest to root out phantom voter fraud.
Last year, Virginia spent $2 million to print and mail official voter registration cards to every eligible voter and then to educate voters on how to use them.
Foolish, yes? But not nearly as ridiculous as Republican lawmakers’ push now to render those cards worthless.
Gov. Bob McDonnell has the power to stop this wasteful nonsense that soon will appear on his desk in the form of Sen. Mark Obershain’s SB 1256. It’s the latest Republican fantasy force shield to ward off make-believe voter fraud by requiring that every voter produce a photo identification card for his vote to count on Election Day. No photo? Off to the provisional ballot line.
