Friday letters

Episcopalians, same-sex marriage and Roe v. Wade in today’s letters to the editor.

Pick of the Day: The eco-conscious tax

Thanks to the wisdom of our legislators in Richmond, those individuals who purchase fuel-efficient vehicles will be assessed a fee for their efforts to improve the environment, minimize their use of fuel, cut personal expenses, etc.

Perhaps we need to offer our wise legislators suggestions of other ways they might punish environmentally conscientious consumers.

How about a fee for purchasing energy-efficient appliances?

And there could be a fee for those who use low-wattage fluorescent lighting.

And definitely there could be a fee assessed for installing new windows.

Wow, this could be a gold mine for the Virginia General Assembly.

In reference to the letter about same sex marriage, my belief along with about 100 mill if not more world wide, is we wont have to worry about meeting a gay or lesbien angle at the gates, unless he is talking about the gates of hell. God doesnt make mistakes, period. Jesus said love the sinner hate the sin, but in no way do I believe that Jesus will allow you into his kingdom knowing that you contiuned down the path of sin. If this was his intention then there would have been 2 different couples made by God, not just one. So I really dont have to worry about meeting a gay angel because I am heading upstairs.
And please dont start with hate speach this has nothing to do with that. It has to do with my belief in Gods word.

    Herb….

With all due respect, what you seemingly have a belief in is a group of words written my men who purportedly had some kind of devine interention with what they deemed a higher power. As you will note, all the books of the Bible are written by men and are alledged to be the “word of God.”

Whether you meet an angel of any variation is really immaterial. I would be more concerned about meeting angels here on earth as I know quite a few gays and lesbians who are indeed angels and do good things for their fellow men and women…you just may not be aware of it.

As far as your chances of “going upstairs” being any greater than any of the gays or lesbians I know, I would give even money on that bet. Saying one’s chances on getting there depends upon their sexual orientation appears rather judgemental to me and I think one of the writers of the Bible said something to the affect of “judge not lest ye be judged”. Do you not believe in all the Bible says?

Somehow living a lie to conform to some sterotype is a greater sin than being honest about who and what an individual is. I suspect that if indeed there is a god, honesty and integrity rank pretty high on that clip board of items to check off before those gates to either heaven or hell are selected.

    Will,
Good deeds will not get a person into heaven, So IMO the statement about angels doing good things here on earth weather gay or not, has no bearing, at all on geting there. It is the believe in Gods only son Jesus that allows a person to get there and repentence. Even the murder at the last minute got to heaven because of his believe and hi repentence of his sins. If you are gay you can believe in God, Satan does. No man is perfect, but IMO you must try to live every day for his will and saying the Homosexuality is Gods will, doesnt fly. Thats like me saying I break in your house and steal to feed my family, so it should be OK. Its a choice.
I keep hearing about the book written by man, you are correct, but its amazing that every single one of Gods Prophacies has come true.

My personal belief is that both sides of the God/No God argument would simply shut it.

RE: Energy Efficiency “TAX”: Another person who thinks electricity comes from a fairy via the magic outlet.

And that the batteries used in hybrids and plug-in cars are environmentally friendly and never go bad. Wow. The scientifically enlightened sometimes aren’t.

Energy Efficient windows on your home do not pay for additional roadways or repair to existing roadways.

Low-wattage flourescent lighting contains vile gasses. It is required so that when the photons strike the coated glass, a light is emitted. I won’t go into the economics of “saving” when a $3 bulb lasts about 2 months, which seems to be the typical life I get out of CFL’s if I pay less than about $7 EACH for them.

Energy Efficient appliances are great! But they don’t pay gas tax, either… which means no road repair or road building. And where is that magic electricity fairy? Just missed her!

One thing I am glad to see: The hype of these front-loading washers is wearing off rapidly. What a marketing ploy. They do use less water… but they use about 20 minutes more electricity in the process. And you better hope that gasket on the door never fails! Who’s bright idea was that, anyways?

The one thing that I have always learn is not to judge… God does not judge…

    Good luck with that.

Herb that is indeed your opinion. You’re certainly free to have whatever opinion that you like however my belief is that it’s time to treat people respectfully here on earth and the rest will take care of itself. I think people tend to be a little too preoccupied with the hereafter and not occupied enough with the present day.

I’m not particularly worried about getting one place or another I just try to do right by myself.

Gosh…I really should have enough sense to leave this alone, but when has that ever happened.

Actually, my interference here is in that I see “hope”(?). I don’t see evil in Herb or Will…..please, not that it is my position to, either way. I do see two decent men trying to find their way in the world….and….

In my honest opinion….as politics…..let us (me) just say simply….things get thick.

I fully agree Will has every right to live his life, as is his life. But that doesn’t mean it will be any less problematic than other’s.

I also realize that reality has political manifestations that he has every right to pursue/advocate….fight, etc.

Yet…and admitedly to a very real extent (as portrayed here, thank you)…those (as all) politics fall into broader generalities (“ideologies”…dogma?) As do Herb’s, and everyone else’s.

I cannot speak for Will (or Herb)…and I know we all look for allies & comfort….but my only rub with the entire gay question is the lock-step association the left claims.

It’s been said….and by my limited, anecdotal experience, it’s true…one can count one’s freinds on the fingers of one hand. 3 of my 4 have been gay or bi-sexual. Two have confided their love for me…..but said they knew better than to pursue because they knew was not my “cup of tea”…..and did not want to loose my freindship. All three, happened to be what would today be called politically “conservative”…..but what I have always called true liberals.

I am not trying to tell anyone how to live their lives, practice their politics or seek their God. I admit that the left’s position on all issues…including this one….bothers me with what I perceive as a pre-conceived piety.

    Thank you gentlemen.

  10. Sandi Saunders | March 8, 2013 at 10:52 pm

I believe that people whose ideology leads them to practice what Jesus taught have the right to a certain level of “piety”, although I consider it to actually be confidence.

There is nothing that anyone can say that will ever convince me that God will condemn a loving couple committed to each other and trying to live as Jesus taught us all to live.

I have never met a man or woman qualified to tell me what God will or will not do. I do not believe I ever will. I am counting on God being bigger than his creation, in every way.
