Virginia’s 6th District Rep. Bob Goodlatte is getting high marks from Democrats and Republicans alike as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. A story in The Hill today reports that committee members across the political spectrum praise him not only for his unfailing civility, but his interest in listening to and actually considering opposing arguments.
The change in tone since Goodlatte took over the chairmanship from fellow Republican Lamar Smith has given a bit of hope to lawmakers that the House might be able to do bipartisan deals on immigration reform and guns. They think the even-handed Goodlatte might be the guy to find just enough common ground to bring the parties together and move the country forward on those polarizing issues.
The Roanoke County Republican is as firmly conservative in his views, though, as he is willing to listen to others. So, radical change in either area? I’m guessing no. But some progress is better than none. Go, Bob.
