The web site Slate has Virginia in its cross-hairs today with two stories about goings on here. One is a pretty good roundup of the uranium mining situation. Regular Roanoke Times readers probably won’t learn much from it, but it does a good job summarizing where things stand.
The second, and more interesting, is the award of “Dumb idea of the week” to Bob McDonnell’s transportation proposal. From the piece:
Ask a reasonably intelligent eight-year-old what Virginia should do about this problem, and odds are the answer will be, “raise the gas tax—duh.” But reasonably intelligent eight-year-olds do not make policy in Virginia. Instead the state has Republican Governor Robert F. McDonnell, who has devised what he is convinced is a far cleverer scheme: drop the gas tax altogether and tax shoppers instead. Oh, and Prius owners.
This is the second Slate slam on McDonnell’s plan in as many days. Yesterday the site’s economics writer called it “the most straightforwardly terrible policy I’ve heard in a while.”
