Discuss Radmacher's column

Harris sails off into the sunset
By Dan Radmacher
Radmacher is the editorial page editor of The Roanoke Times.

Nelson Harris is a good person who genuinely cares about Roanoke. He had a compelling vision for the city's future and worked to make that vision reality.

But under his mayoral leadership, Roanoke City Council acted more like the Soviet Politburo than a small city democracy.

I don't know Brian Wishneff, don't care about Brian Wishneff, but it seems like Dan is going extremely personal on a guy who is out of office. It almost seems like a personal feud, and if it is, are these pages the appropriate place to discuss this?

I think you are confused, Josh.
Did you read the piece, or just go after Dan out of habit?

AJ,

I read the editorial that ran after the election was over that said what a horrible man Wishneff is personally. And today within this piece there was another shot. It just seems too personal, and for what reason? The guy already lost? Slamming him can no longer be intended for the public good (if it ever was).

Come on Josh, you've been reading the Times long enough to know that very little in the editorial pages is altruistic or beneficent.

Harris was, and still is, a bum! I would like to actually have someone detail specifically what he can claim as an accomplishment from part of his "vision". Sure to be a short list IF there is anything on it at all. It's just like we always hear, the liberal media actually wishes for and works to cause the failure of those it does not favor. I think the RT's would enjoy seeing Bowers struggle for no other reason that to be able to say "See, we told you so". The guy has not even had a full week as the victor and the Times has a slam from some enlightened writer just about every day. I think Harris' defeat marks a community rejection of the Roanoke Times trying to control the political goings on in Roanoke as much as it marks a rejection of Harris. There are a whole lot of people out there in Roanoke land that simply want to see the RT's sold and maybe shut down! What a better Roanoke it would be.
