Comment on Friday's editorials

The House GOP's land-use grab
Taxophobic House Republicans rightly want to get on board with smart-growth ideas. Shifting blame for their failures onto localities, though, is wrong.
Virginia's House leaders have made a bold move, all right.
Their proposals to tie local land-use decisions to transportation costs put smart-growth ideas on the state agenda for the first time in a serious way, challenging powerful development lobbies. The shift in priorities is years overdue.

Ecotourism for Franklin County

Re: Friday's Talking Point.

I am surprised the Times feels it appropriate to bring up political differences between President Bush and the late President Ford on the eve of Ford's funeral. But I am sure it suits your purpose, but doesn't show any class. At least President Ford would not criticize President Bush publically while alive, not so with Clinton and Carter. But then what would you expect from liberal democrats.

John,

Why is it classier to wait until your dead to let your feelings known - after you are beyond the reach of those you are criticizing?

Indeed, as an elder statesman, Ford had an obligation to speak up when his words could have affected whether we pursued a disasterous course in Iraq.

There is no class in using the occasion of a funeral to advance your anti-Bush agenda as you and the mainstream media are doing with President Ford's death. The mainstream media hated Ford when he was president. Now they are giving him faint praise and using him to suit their purposes. You might hold off till Wednesday.
