Comment on Thursday's editorials
An accidental hero, or goat?
The late President Ford's mark on history will depend on the long-term consequences of the Nixon pardon, played out over many decades.
The legacy of Gerald R. Ford's brief, accidental presidency rests on that of his predecessor, Richard M. Nixon.

Let voters decide if governors deserve four more years.
In 2010, Gov. Tim Kaine will leave the governor's mansion after four years in office. He will not run for re-election because the Virginia constitution says he may not serve consecutive terms.

GaryIt is amazing to watch how the democrats have re-invented President Ford. At the time he entered office and granted the pardon to Richard Nixon, he was vilified by the left, lampooned by Chevy Chase and generally distained by the liberal politicians and their constant cohorts in the media.
Now, after his passing when comments are dug up that in any way disparage the current president or any other republican office-holder, past or present, the Democrats are praising Ford for his insight and honesty.
What a bunch of opportunistic,bottom-feeders.

C. TrejbalWell, Gary, I'm not technically a Democrat, but speaking as someone from the left side of things, I think Ford's pardon of Nixon was unforgivable. He was a do-nothing president who even vetoed expansion of the Freedom of Information Act (Congress quickly overrode him). I do not share the warm-fuzzy feeling of many.
All that said, I went back and checked The Roanoke Times' editorial after the Nixon pardon. We said it was a good idea then, too.

Bill McClureFor someone not old enough to remember the times, you may think too hard. He was a do nothing President because the Democrats had a 2/3 majority against him. He did heal the wounds brought about by the shrill left, much like today. Well we got Jimmah Carter, who is embarrassing even liberals today with his mouth. What did Mr. Carter bring us? Do you remember Christian? I don't even need to bring the inflation, sorry foreign policy, gas lines, and a multitude of "maladies" that occured in those four years. Gerald Ford was what was needed to heal this country, I stand firmly by a great man, do you have a better alternative, even in 20/20 hindsight? Let's hear it!
