Crime and punishment

The General Assembly is gearing up to pass stiffer punishments for all sorts of crimes. As it does so, Virginians should remember that enforcement and incarceration cost money, dollars that aren't being spent on programs that get at the roots of crime.

I know using illegal drugs is wrong and it should be but with the first offender we should mandate treatment thru Community Service programs and if this doesn't stop the person from using drugs then they deserve the incarceration for their consequences. I get sick and tired of seeing animal abusers treat animals like garbage then get a midemeanor fine. lets make animal abuse a felony with mandatory jail time depending on serverity. Sexual abuse of a minor or rape should carry up to a death sentence. Laws should be upheld and treated equally whether you are rich/poor/college student/ local/ wise or not so wise.

i think steve is correct on drug users, except that the ones wh get caught using drugs other than pot, should be sent to jail , and put on our roads picking up trash, and their orange uniform should say why they are there. they should also have to carry a ball and chain.

Thanks for the support but Pot is illegal also, I always said that pot will become legal when the government can tax it and develop a test to give a person on the highway which would show a remarked deficency in motor skills as alcohol. Pot does cause a remarked decease in motor skills so some limits should be set if made legal.
