Tweeting

We've been tweeting for the last month and a half or so. For those who don't know, Twitter is a tool that allows you to send out short (145 character) messages, known as tweets, telling people what you're up to. Some people use it as a personal tool to keep friends up to date. Others, like us, use it as a way to send out short text alerts when a site or blog is updated. You sign up to follow people or sites you're interested in, and can get updates from them when you log on to Twitter, or even set it up to send alerts to your cell phone.

We have only 12 followers (we'd have more, but I've been blocking the spambots).  We'll keep at it for awhile, but I'm starting to doubt that this is an effective use of time (granted, it only takes a minute or two each morning). If you're a Twitter user, and you haven't signed up to follow us yet, please do (the Roanoke Times news department also uses Twitter, by the way). If you're not a Twitter user, but want to be alerted about blog entries on The RT, check it out.

Conspiracy Theories

We had a post to one of our other threads that deserves pulling out for its own discussion thread, in part to avoid taking the other one off topic again. I've reproduced most of it below. It came from a user named Lisa.

The last gazillion posts that I just read only reaffirmed for me that Josh is not real. How can he be?

Josh is everywhere. He doesn’t seem to sleep, he has an opinion on everything and it usually is in direct opposition to the editorial position of the paper.

I have pretty much concluded that Josh is really a member of the editorial team. They probably sit around at their weekly team meetings and “assign” someone to play “Josh” to exercise/sharpen their collective persuasive arguments for or against ANYTHING. “Josh” allows them a voice to say anything, then they can cyber-wink at each other and tell "him" to calm down.

How do you get to be Josh? Do you draw straws? Is this a coveted or deplored assignment? Does it help? Or is it really J.O.S.H. (Just Our Staff Here) a la H.A.L. from “A Space Odyssey, 2001”, a computer generated program that analyzes the political content of each editorial or issue, and then spits out the most political answer possible. How else does Josh win the 1000th post award? It is an inside game!

If the truth be told, part of me agrees with some (repeat: some, not most)of what Josh has to say, I think, kinda, sorta, maybe…when I can decipher it. And that is part of what makes me proud to be an American. We can agree and disagree in a more or less public forum.

Yes, I did post this, in part, a few weeks ago on another blog page, but watching this debate and Will's comments escalate to the point that someone (Will) feels like he needs to be silent, made me come forward again.

It seems simple enough to me. When Josh, or anyone, puts a partisan label on a non-partisan issue, don't take the bait. Remember, Josh is not real. (Cyber-wink).

Thank you for that moment of levity, Lisa. I literally laughed out loud.

Just to ease your concerns, I categorically deny that Josh is a product of the editorial board. I don't think we could come up with everything he does.

That said, I was discussing Josh with a friend of mine who follows the posts. He theorizes that Josh is actually members of the local Republican committee all collaborating under a shared username. I don't believe it, but it's fun to speculate.

So, here's the thread fpr everyone to share his or her favorite amusing conspiracy theories about the editorial board and the RT. Have some fun with it and keep it friendly.

Live-blogging the State of the Union

Several members of the editorial board will be commenting here live during the State of the Union and Sen. James Webb's response tonight.

Columnist search

Yesterday was the deadline for submissions from people interested in writing a regular column for The Roanoke Times. The response was phenomenal. I haven't done a count in a while, but I'm guessing more than 100 people sent in submissions.

I'm starting the initial screening process now. It will take some time to narrow down to the final candidates, and we haven't decided yet exactly how we'll make the ultimate selection - but we'd like to find a way to get reader input.

We'll keep everyone updated on the process here.

Another long weekend

We're about to hang it up for another long weekend. You got to love the holidays. We'd love them more, I'm sure, if holidays at a newspaper didn't simply mean cramming more work into less time.

We've got some interesting editorials coming up over the long weekend, though, including a list of suggested resolutions for some folks in the news.

Enjoy.

Merry Christmas...

... and Happy Holidays. Sorry. Couldn't resist.

We're closing up shop for the long weekend. Blogging will likely be light even into next week because we'll be short-handed. We'll try to get entries up for folks to comment on editorials even over the weekend, and I'll throw out a couple open threads in case people have thoughts to share.

Enjoy your holiday, however, or whatever, you celebrate.

Welcome to the RT

Welcome to The RT. That’s The Roanoke Times RoundTable, our new editorial page blog.

What The RT becomes will be largely up to readers. But we envision a place for a healthy and civil dialogue among The Roanoke Times editorial page staff and the community.

In his introductory column back in 1998, retired editorial page editor Tommy Denton said of the opinion and commentary pages, “Here is where the bully pulpit and the soapbox become one, extending one of the finest and most enduring of this nation's traditions: the raucous harmony of a free people holding forth.”

We hope The RT will bring that raucous harmony to The Times’ corner of the digital world, where more people can join in, and where there is the possibility for real discussion.
