Photo from Daisy Girl Scout Troop's first meeting

Daisy Girl Scout Troop 1203 had its first Daisy meeting for the scouting season along with its first parents meeting. Their activities consisted of marble painting and a bit of acting. The girls rolled marbles in a box on paper for a creative piece of art. They then enjoyed an animal game where the girls called out the name of an animal and had to act it out. The Daisy troop also welcomed its newest member, Kelsey Sink. Leaders of the troop are Darlene Cash and Robin Harris.

We also have a photo gallery from the Daisy troop.

Terrific Tuesday

These goose neck gourds were grown by Ikenberry's

It's Terrific Tuesday again, how's every thing in your neck of the woods?

First and foremost the folks at Second Harvest Food Bank want you to know that the $100,000 donation by Oscar Mayer was a national donation. The good folks here still need your donations. If you want to see me as an Oscar Mayer hot dog one more time, click here.

These are goose neck gourds on sale at Ikenberry's store in Daleville. They were grown there said Gwen Ikenberry and have a really goose shape figure. Make a funny porch decoration, I think. They have 'punkin's as well. Hey, they also have a corn maze. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night you get to carry flashlight to go through the maze. That sounds like fun! On Halloween the maze will be haunted. LB and JR have football games that night. Isn't that scary!

I have a goose. I highly recommend getting a gourd instead. She is kind of mean and started attacking visitors, so we have to keep her up, but she is still the best guard goose around. She honks to infinity and beyond.

It won't be long until we get a frost as this morning was unseasonably cool. I felt the chill on Wall Street all the way down here! See ya next week!

Mountain Magic in Fall this Saturday in Buchanan

Here's a reminder about Mountain Magic In Fall…from the Town Improvement Committee:

Discover Small Town America

Introduce your family to history that they can see and touch as treasures from the past and present await your discovery in downtown Buchanan. Celebrate the unique qualities that can only be found in “small town America” during Buchanan’s fourteenth annual, Mountain Magic In Fall Bluegrass, Antiques and Crafts Festival. Join us on Saturday, October 4th from 10AM - 5PM.

Explore two centuries of history in Buchanan’s downtown buildings. Each is filled with mom & pop shops offering everything from antiques & art to furniture, collectibles, flowers and so much more. Locally owned restaurants offer burgers & fries, hearty Italian, fresh made pizza, homemade German and good old-fashioned southern cooking.

The musical heritage of the region lives on as Bluegrass musicians entertain crowds from Center Stage. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself joining in song and dance. Browse through dozens of traditional and contemporary craft booths and antique vendors lining Main Street to sell their wares.

Marvel at the beauty of machinery on display during this year’s Antique Auto and Tractor Show. Antique cars and tractors will line Main Street near Trinity Episcopal Church. Individuals as well as Auto Clubs travel from near and far to display their vehicles as part of the day’s activities.

Don’t forget to “save the date!” Buchanan invites you and your family to discover all the joys of “small town America” during our annual Mountain Magic In Fall Festival.

County will include recent home sales in fair market value for reassessments

Botetourt County announced today that the Botetourt County reassessment is beginning with a market study of property sales in the county. Wampler-Eanes Appraisal Group of Daleville is conducting the market study, which it expects to be complete by December 31. Sate Law requires that localities periodically adjust real estate values to 100% of fair market value for tax purposes. the county is up to reassess for taxes in 2006.

A team of appraisers will inspects parcels of land recently sold for inclusion in the sales study. The sales study will establish a baseline of comparable value for the various types of properties in Botetourt County. The baseline will then be used to reassess parcels to fair market value.

A team of Wampler- Eanes personnel in clearly marked cars and bearing identification will be going through the County in the next three months.

The company was appointed by the Board of Supervisors this summer to carry out the reassessment.

Wampler- Eanes can be contacted at 992-2273.

Teen Scene: 369 middle schoolers dance, dance, dance!

Tanner Price dances with friends

For almost 30 years the Botetourt Town and Country Woman's Club has held activities to benefit the youth of Botetourt County. None more fun than another generation of middle schoolers at Saturday night's first Teen Scene of the year sponsored by BTCWC held at Central Academy. Kids from both county middle schools attended. They danced non stop for three hours!

As an old hand at the teen scene Events, Annette Clark who acted as a dance chaperone for the club said, "This group seems to dance more than the groups before." Indeed the gym was full of throbbing clusters of students not unlike a Watusi tribe getting ready for battle. It was a mini version of a dance revolution.

The cafeteria provided a place for snacks and "glo- in- the- dark" items to be purchased. The DJ's never took a break and amazingly, these kids knew many line dances unheard of to the older folks chaperoning the dance. It was absoluteley mazing to watch dozens of kids do the Cotton Eye Joe, the Electric Slide and the Cha, Cha and plenty of other unamed dances!

Slow dances brought many 6th graders into uncharted territory-- the first dance with a crush or just a member of the class. Some were boy asks girls and othe rs were girl asks boy. The announcer always said with the slow song-- "If some one asks you to dance don't turn them down, be kind!" The BTCWC believes in encouraging Character Counts!

The next dance is scheduled for late fall at Read Mountain Middle School.
